''The Formula'' is a 1980 mystery film directed by John G. Avildsen. It was produced and written by Steve Shagan, who adapted his own 1979 novel ''The Formula''. The film stars Marlon Brando, George C. Scott, Marthe Keller, John Gielgud, G. D. Spradlin, and Beatrice Straight. The film centers on the efforts of various groups attempting to either secure or destroy a synthetic fuel formula invented by the Nazis at the end of World War II, which could end global reliance on oil. ''The Formula'' was released on 19 December 1980 and received mixed-to negative reviews from critics. At the 53rd Academy Awards, the film received a nomination for Best Cinematography. ''The Formula'' is a fan film that premiered online in 2002. Made in Iowa by a group of friends over 18 months, the movie documents a ''Star Wars'' fan's attempt to make an epic fan film of his own, only to become disillusioned by the process and turn on his friends. The movie centers on the motivations of fan filmmakers, and proved popular for encouraging other would-be filmmakers to not give up their own projects and enjoy the process. ''The Formula'' has been featured as a leading representative of the fanfilm genre, with print references in ''The Weekly Standard'' and ''The Times''. It eventually screened theatrically, showing as an official selection at the 2003 Cedar Rapids Film Festival. It was released as the third single to support the album and reached #4 on the Hot Rap Songs and #76 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts in April 1990. "The Formula" has been seen as the song that invented G-funk. ''The Formula'' is the second collaborative studio album by American rapper Buckshot and record producer 9th Wonder. It was released on April 29, 2008 through Duck Down Music. Recording sessions took place at De Stu at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Production was handled entirely by 9th Wonder, with Buckshot and Drew "Dru-Ha" Friedman serving as executive producers. It features guest appearances from Carlitta Durand, Arafat Yates, Big Chops, Keisha Shontelle, Swan, Talib Kweli, Tyler Woods and the Formula Crew. The album debuted at #137 on the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart, opening with 5,874 units sold.
